Zync

Imagine chatting with a friend on Yahoo! Messenger about a hot new video that was released on the Internet. You’re trying to describe it to the best of your ability through the chat window, but it just doesn’t have the same effect as actually watching the video. Why not share the actual video as if you were sitting on a couch together?

Zync™ is a plug-in for Yahoo! Messenger for Windows that allows you to watch videos together. With Zync, you can watch a video, pause it at that right moment, and chat about it with your friends.

Try Zync today and start sharing and discussing your favorite videos together with your messenger buddies.

Zync was created by David Ayman Shamma of the Internet Experiences Group, part of Economics and Social Systems at Yahoo! Research. It was built by Ayman and Sergiy Matusevych and was launched with the help of Tom Maher, Pras Sarkar, and George Levchenko.

How to Zync

If you have Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 for Windows installed, Zync is built in!

  1. Simply enter a video URL to a friend from Yahoo! Video, Flickr, or YouTube and you will see an inline player and a "Watch With Me" button.

  2. Click the "Watch With Me" button and Zync will start up and play that video in sync.

  3. Once Zync is running, just send a URL to your buddy in an IM message and Zync will load it automatically.

  3. Hey, I dont mean any harm, but this Zync player for yahoo messenger is a piece of crap. I try half the videos on there and the links are defaulty, and when I think others work, they end up being defaulty too. If you prefer to, I request to see if you can fix this problem, because I try to show my girlfriend some romantic music videos and they never work. Any assistance will be appreciated, thank you. A devoted yahoo-er, Kyle

  6. If you see "Embedding disabled by request" that is because the YouTube video owner disabled it. However, Music Videos from Yahoo! should work well - and there are a lot of them on http://music.yahoo.com.

  7. Maybe I'm not up to par... A friend showed it to me but I couldn't get it to work. Nice idea though.

  8. Can this be used by more than one person you're chatting with.....I think it's working with one but not two atm.....hmmm

  9. The plug was working great up until now. Each time I try to play a file it keeps saying "An error occurred, please try again later." Meanwhile my friend on the othersie is able to view the video just fine. This isn't a case of Embedding being disabled. I have tried reinstalling the YIM and plug-in and it only ends up the same.
